It is difficult to recognize that efforts, resources and feelings were deposited in the wrong place, but it is necessary to do so. Actually, links based on fear do not help us. We hold on to bad habits because we don’t really strive to grow and we need an excuse to justify our failures. We keep our bad habits because we don’t really love each other. The threat of losing the false security of the old convictions gradually weakens the ability to improve.
We all have defense mechanisms whose purpose is to protect ourselves from the supposed or imaginary pain that reality presents. Defenses allow us more time to reconsider a dangerous situation and to find the best way to act. Unfortunately, rigid defenses reject pain. They filter and distort reality and, by getting used to the false sense of security created by them, we become their prisoners and slaves with full consent.
For example, the modern defense against evil takes the form of the scaled production of weapons and military powers. At its end, this produced Hitler and Vietnam. Campaigns to destroy evil paradoxically have generated more evil in the world. Sometimes the shot goes through the butt and the desire to achieve the best causes the worst: we want to clean the world, perfect it, purify it from the enemies of God and eliminate evil so that Democracy reigns.
A creative use of destructive energy would be to accept that we are varied and temporal beings. Thus the human being can choose between despair or trusting in the “sacrosanct life of the cosmos” in the unknown God of life, whose mysterious purpose is expressed in the amazing drama of cosmic evolution.
